The Many Faces of Jett

Welcome to IDS update, No. 4, sponsored by the movie Inside Out.

(Nah, not really; I made that up. But you’ll probably get what I mean in a second.)

As I said last time, I’m starting to draw up concepts and a plot that are a small percentage away from what I think will roughly resemble the finished plans. The idea was to create individual designs that could be recreated in a short amount of time, ideally a few minutes. With this technique, it becomes easier to design the individual pages of the book.

So far, I’ve done some concepts that only take a few minutes from careful planning to close perfection, and I think they’ve turned out just fine.

You’ve all met Jett last time around, right? If you haven’t, don’t worry; there’s some new concepts of him down below:

For this quick “sketch dump” (an assortment of rough sketches), I imagined this guy with five distinctive facial expressions; this was to get an idea of how he would be feeling or reacting in a number of situations. I like to call this the “Inside Out method” (after the Pixar movie) since the goal is to design the character in five different emotions, then place the expressions from left to right (technically, a W-shape) so that they are in the same order as the emotions from the movie in this picture. In other words, the photos are meant to express — from left to right, in a W-path — fear, sadness, joy, anger, and disgust.

Overall, I seem to be getting on track with work on the book for the project. Because of said work (and because of school), I haven’t posted anything on DeviantArt for one or two weeks. I’ll post something soon, though.

Stay tuned!
